Gleason Brothers Finish First and Fourth
In Spec Miata Enduro at Pocono
LONG POND, Pa., May 12 - Chris Gleason Jr. and Kevin Gleason, sons of veteran
racer Chris Gleason of Johnstown, Pa., finished first and fourth,
respectively, in a two-and-a-half-hour Spec Miata enduro on the road course at Pocono
International Raceway Sunday.
Driving separate Spec Miatas prepared by Jim Locke Motorsports that advertise
Gleason Financial, Chris qualified fifth and Kevin qualified sixth in the
30-car field despite the fact it was their first experience racing at the Mario
Andretti-designed track.
"I was running in fourth place for most of the race," Chris Jr. related.
"There's a mandatory five-minute pit stop for fuel in these events, and I came
into the pits around the halfway point. When I came out of the pits I ended up
catching the second- and third-place cars, and we battled for five or six laps
before I was able to pass them.
"The leader was about 70 seconds ahead of me, but in the last five minutes of
the race he had mechanical problems," he continued. "I inherited the lead
and went on to win. It sort of fell into our lap there at the end, but it
worked out!
"I have to thank Jim Locke and the rest of the crew," he added. "We had some
problems on Saturday in the sprint race, and they changed the transmission in
my car on Saturday so I had a great car for Sunday's race."
"I had a good start," Kevin recounted. "Chris fell back at the start but I
was able to get around on the outside. But then later on the first lap I got
off into the grass in the chicane on the backstretch, and I fell back about
eight spots. The rest of the race I tried to just stay consistent with my lap
times and work my way back up.
"I didn't make any other mistakes the rest of the way, and I was able to get
fourth at the end," he concluded. "Except for the problem on the first lap
everything went well; I didn't have any contact with any other drivers, and our
pit stop went well."
The Gleason brothers now have one Spec Miata enduro victory apiece, as Kevin
won a similar event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio April
13. Chris Jr. finished second that day.
Although their plans are not final, the brothers may compete in another event
at Mid-Ohio on Memorial Day weekend.
Chris Jr., 27, works in the Philadelphia office of Gleason Financial, where
he is a financial consultant and benefits specialist. Kevin, 21, is a sophomore
at Niagara University in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
